More than just a restoration

As part of a major enhancement of the town’s Broadfield Park, Rochdale Council wished to re-instate the fine Macfarlane bandstand which had long been a major feature of the park. Very little remained – a broken column and a short length of balustrade.

Our brief was to rebuild the bandstand to its original design. The first step was to spend a day at Beamish Museum, working through their original Macfarlane catalogues, trying to link catalogue items with the faded photos of the bandstand. Then, casting patterns had to be made to match the chosen component drawings before reconstruction could get under way.

The whole roof was pre-fabricated in halves, bolted together on site and lifted into place, followed by the little cupola and finial on top.
